Shenton Primary School

Empowering and nurturing young minds to achieve excellence

Shenton School Governors

The role of a school governor can be demanding but very rewarding and a good way to give back to your local community. School governing bodies are responsible for working with the school to ensure that it delivers a good education. Together with the headteacher, who is responsible for the day-to-day management, they set the school’s aims and policies. Our governing body meets monthly as a full governing body without committees.

We are always looking for new governors and associate members to join our new and growing governing body. If you wish to contact the governors you can email govs@sparkenhoe.leicester.sch.uk or send post to the school office marked ‘for the attention of the governing body’.

Key roles of governors

  • To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • To hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff.
  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

Who can be a governor?

You don’t have to have children at the school to be a governor. However, you do have to be over 18 and pass a formal check for your suitability to be within a school. No specific qualifications are required and a full induction programme is run in partnership with the local authority. However, there are certain expectations, please see our code of conduct for further details.

What’s really important is that you have the skills, time and commitment to help drive school improvement and the passion and ambition to achieve the best possible education for children and young people.

The Governing Body meets 4-6 times a year, to discuss how well the school is doing and ensure the school is running smoothly and effectively.

Governors visit the school regularly, providing reports for the full Governing Body. These reports help to make sure that the school is continually challenged to improve.

The role of being a Shenton Governor is very rewarding, many improvements have been seen over the years.
