Music overview
At Shenton Primary School, we teach a weekly progressive programme of knowledge and skills scheme called Charanga which compliments the National Curriculum outcomes and our own curriculum within our school.
Children will have the opportunity to study famous musicians throughout history and musical genres from around the world, to nurture a love of music and develop a cultural awareness of music starting from the EYFS through to Year 6.
A focus is placed on developing strands such as creating and reading music, exploring musical instruments, singing and performing learning, for children to express themselves and begin to develop an interest and developing a passion for music.
In each year group, children will also develop an understanding of a wide breadth of age appropriate musical vocabulary, linked to differentiated units of work.
The carefully planned sequence of learning of music allows children to IMPROVISE, COMPOSE, PERFORM and CONSOLIDATE learning in every year group progressively across the school.
To expose children to explore other instruments during their learning at our school, a recorder scheme has been trialed for year 6 pupils during the summer term. This is aimed to also encourage children to consider the exploration of other instruments or continue to develop recorder skills once leaving the school.

Steel Pan Bands
Children learn to play steel pans in Year 4. Those who show a keen interest and talent are selected to continue as part of our steel pan band in Y5 and Y6. You may hear them play at school events like the Summer Fayre.
