Equality Information
The school takes its responsibilities under The Equality Act 2010 extremely seriously. As part of this, the school has three specific duties:
- Our first duty is to eliminate discrimination;
- Our second duty is to advance equality of opportunity; and,
- Our third duty is to foster good relationships between all our children.
The school has an equality policy, which is kept under review by the Governing Body.
The school collates information about the impact of this policy. This allows staff to take appropriate action to ensure positive

Shenton Primary School Accessibility Policy 2024
- This Accessibility Plan was first drawn up in consultation with the Local Authority, pupils, parents, staff and governors of the school and covered the period from April 2006 – March 2009. It is reviewed annually.
We are committed to providing a fully accessible environment which values and includes all pupils, staff, parents and visitors regardless of their education, physical, sensory, social, spiritual, emotional and cultural needs. We are committed to challenging negative attitudes about disability and accessibility and to developing a culture of awareness, tolerance and inclusion.
School plans, over time, to increase the accessibility of provision for all pupils, staff and visitors to the school. The Accessibility Plan will contain relevant actions to:
- Improve access to the physical environment of the school, adding specialist facilities as necessary. This covers improvements to the physical environment of the school and physical aids to access education.
- Increase access to the curriculum for pupils with a disability, expanding the curriculum as necessary to ensure that pupils with a disability are as, equally, prepared for life as are the able-bodied pupils; (If a school fails to do this they are in breach of the DDA). This covers teaching and learning and the wider curriculum of the school such as participation in after-school clubs, leisure and cultural activities or school visits. It also covers the provision of specialist aids and equipment, which may assist these pupils in accessing the curriculum.
Improve the delivery of written information to pupils, staff, parents and visitors with disabilities. Examples might include handouts, timetables, textbooks and information about the school and school events. The information should be made available in various preferred formats within a reasonable time frame.
We acknowledge that there is a need for ongoing awareness raising and training for staff and governors in the matter of disability discrimination and the need to inform attitudes on this matter.
The Accessibility Plan should be read in conjunction with the following policies, strategies and documents:
- Curriculum
- Equal Opportunities and Diversity
- Staff Development
- Health & Safety (including off-site safety)
- Inclusion
- Special Needs
- Behaviour Management
- School Improvement Plan
- Asset Management Plan
- School Brochure and Mission Statement

- Actions for physical accessibility relates to the Access Audit of the School, which is undertaken regularly by the Local Authority.
- As curriculum policies are reviewed, a section relating to access will be added to that on Equality and Diversity. The terms of reference for all governors’ will contain an item on inclusion and providing equal opportunities.
- The School Prospectus makes reference to inclusion and equal opportunities.
- The School’s Complaints Procedure covers inclusion and equal opportunities.
- Inclusion and equal opportunities will be monitored by the Governing Body.
- The school will work in partnership with Attenborough Learning Trust and the local education authority in developing and implementing any future plans.
- Plans will be monitored by Ofsted as part of their inspection cycle.
- The School meets the requirements of the Disability Equality Scheme.
- The school has ensured full access to any child or adult with mobility issues, with ramps into each area of the school for wheel chairs etc
- The school ensures an annual independent health & safety audit which considers inclusion and equal opportunities.
- The school ensures any child with special educational needs that requires adaptations is audited by relevant specialists e.g. A visual impairment survey. This occurs as often as is needed, usually annually, is reported to Governors and any reasonable recommendations are actioned. Where adaptations suggested are considerable, Leicester City Council will be consulted. A plan will be agreed between Governors, parents and the city council.
- The school seeks to translate into main languages any exceptional information in written form. The school also seeks to have dual language information or to provide translators for other important meetings as required. The school website also serves to provide dual language information for new parents.
- For continual monitoring, Governors will analyse independent audit information on an annual basis through the Health, Safety and Premises Committee. Governors will be able to monitor completed actions through the Headteachers termly report.
