Shenton Primary School

Empowering and nurturing young minds to achieve excellence

Curriculum OVERVIEW

At Shenton we provide a rich, broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. We believe that if we are to help our children learn to live in modern Britain and prepare for them for their futures in the 21st Century as independent and responsible citizens; we need to provide learning opportunities which enable them to work co-operatively, think creatively and critically and have enquiring minds, whilst ensuring children have a broad factual basis from which to build.

Underpinning our curriculum are the school values of respect, confidence, collaboration, communication, perseverance and enquiry which the children helped to develop. These support our work in ensuring that our environment and the opportunities we provide at Shenton promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and enable it to flourish. Our aim is to develop confident and resilient children who are able to meet the demands of modern society. For further information see our Teaching and Learning policy.

Curriculum Maps

In the Foundation Stage we use a cross curricular approach which means that most subjects are taught within topics. We do however teach Reading skills, early Writing skills and Mathematics as discrete elements too.

Please follow this link to the Foundation Stage Curriculum.

For Year 1 to Year 6, we follow the National Curriculum. Our Curriculum is carefully planned to ensure all subjects are taught in every year group and there is good breadth and coverage. Click on the subjects below to see the progression of skills and knowledge that are taught and how they build on each other to ensure children know more and remember more throughout their journey at Shenton. We want to make learning engaging, purposeful and exciting for the children so it is embedded in their long term memory.

Below you will find links to information about what we teach and when. For more information on how we teach Reading, Writing and Maths click on the hyperlink to take you to the page.

Connected Creative Curriculum

The children are curious and love learning about the world around them. They are interested in all sorts of areas from learning about planets, dinosaurs, how machines and gadgets work, why things happen, how people lived in the past as well as learning about different countries. It helps children to make more sense of their learning and motivates them to want to learn more if learning is taught in themes or topics. These themes includes History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art and Music and form our Connected Creative Curriculum.

As parents, you will receive a flyer at the beginning of each half term outlining what the children will learn and how you can help at home. Towards the end of the topic you will receive an invitation to celebrate their learning! You may be invited to visit a cafe, or attend a circus, or visit an art gallery the children have developed. We know the children get very excited about you coming, and that many of you enjoy seeing how well your children are doing.

Please come in and talk to us if you would like any more information, or if you have any questions.
